Mendoza: Alfredo Cornejo opened the door to an alliance with Javier Milei

One year after the inauguration of Javier Mileithe governor of Mendoza, Alfredo Cornejoanalyzed different provincial and national issues and referred to the possibility of coming together in an alliance with the political force led by the President.

“There is a communion, a hard core of coincidences. I wouldn’t rule out that we could go together,” said the former head of the Radical Civic Union (UCR) when asked about the chance of joining forces with Milei in view of the 2025 legislative elections.

The Mendoza terroir is no less important for La Libertad Avanza (LLA). There, the libertarian economist obtained 71% of the votes in the presidential runoff against the candidate of Unión por la Patria (UP), Sergio Massa. For this reason, the province is a bastion of the ruling party.

However, beyond the nod to the President, Cornejo clarified that “There is no proposal that has been made to us, but I wouldn’t rule it out.”

It went unnoticed, but Milei officials Luis Lucero, Pablo Quirno and Juan Pazo, spoke of Mendoza’s high institutionality for the business climate. “If a national government that does not give praise thinks this way, it would not be at all strange for us to have a front,” mentioned during an interview with Los Andes.

Javier Milei visited Mendoza at the beginning of September.

At the same time, he made differences: “I do not believe in demolishing the State. On the contrary, I want a better State to work on equal opportunities and the state functions that the province has. In terms of security I want more State, and so on in the rest of the issues that we take charge of.”

“What happens is that those who dress as mileistas also have the idea in Mendoza that when they won the election it was because of them, and the truth is that they won it because of Milei. So, they show differences with the provincial government, but they are inconsistent with what the national government of the Mendoza government thinks”, concluded the Cuyo boss.

The LLA intern in Mendoza

Last November, the Electoral Justice granted union status to LLA in Mendoza, after a tough internal battle that included a war over fake endorsements and cross-complaints. At the beginning of the mandate, Karina Milei had anointed Lourdes Arrieta as head of the party in the province.

After Arrieta’s departure from the libertarian orbit, she was removed from the centrality of the space and replaced by national deputy Facundo Correa Llano, who finished the task of making the party official.

On the national board, Cornejo is one of the governors who shows the greatest closeness to the Casa Rosada, although he seeks not to lose centrality in his district.

As he told Scopevarious dialogue leaders view with concern the advance of the troops commanded by Karina Milei in their provinces. Cornejo even raised it with the President during the summit that the UCR chiefs held at the Casa Rosada some time ago.

In the province, furthermore, LLA and the PRO work together, so the possibility of an alliance to challenge the governor is latent.

There are also some proper names that worry the Cambia Mendoza front. One of them is that of the current vice president of Aerolíneas Argentinas, Omar de Marchi, who challenged Cornejo in last year’s provincial elections.

Another is that of the Minister of Defense, Luis Petri, a native of the province. Last year, he fell internally against the current governor, although he showed a good performance.

The scenario is complex and forces Cornejo to balance. This week, a study by the consulting firm Demokratia showed that the President has an approval rating of 56.8% in the province, based on 700 surveys carried out in Greater Mendoza.
