“Our grandparents”, one of the works by Rember Yahuarcani exhibited at the Marco de la Boca Museum
Rember Yahuarcani
Also with the assistance of the ambassador of Peru, the exhibition of Rember YahuarcaniPeruvian visual artist of Uitoto and Cocaine origin, who represented his country alongside his father, also a prominent painter, at the 2024 Venice Biennale entitled “Foreigners everywhere”under the curatorship of Adriano Pedrosa. He is also a journalist, cultural producer and manager in the music industry.
Born in Pevas in 1986, Yahuarcani is an activist for rights and respect for indigenous cosmologies and knowledge; His work recovers and deals with the myths and memories of White Heron Clanone of the last families of the Uitoto indigenous nation in the Peruvian Amazon.
Fables, myths, traditions were transmitted to him by his grandmother Martha Lopez Pinedomatriarch of the Aymenú, as well as the terrible crimes and abuses committed against her people for the extraction of rubber. Hence, the artist maintains that “transmitting, listening to and disseminating indigenous cultures is key to preventing them from being erased.”
His work is a kind of daydream that encodes ancient messages, a vision through nature and the world that surrounds us, he noted during his speech at the pre-inauguration for the press and special guests.
This artist, whose beautiful work excites, belongs to the deep Amazon, also pointed out that he rejects the category of indigenous art that seems to have recently been discovered since academics, researchers and scientists have appropriated his voice, which is why he rejects the category of indigenous art. for him “art is art” and seeks, with its work, both respect and to regain dignity.
Refined lines, landscapes and characters, forests where everything is: medicine, food, colors that he captures with great wisdom, Rember feels that each stroke of what he paints is a vindication of his own, it can be dreamlike for some and as he points out Sandra Juarezcurator of the exhibition, “dreams are a central part of active life, they are considered a bridge between wakefulness and the spiritual, when dreaming you access ancestral wisdom and mythical creation.”
“Every indigenous artist has to be a political actor”since the artist lights the way to defend the threatened natural and social ecosystem.
