A steep career followed in the GDR, where she was considered one of the most popular and successful actresses for many years. In the 1970s, the success ebbed somewhat, but Bodenstein continued to be a frequently seen actress in numerous GDR cinema and television productions. At the same time, she also pursued her theater career and also appeared as a chanson singer.

Christel Bodenstein, who lived in Berlin for many years, was initially married to the filmmaker Konrad Wolf (1925-1982) from 1960 to 1978. The actress has a son from this marriage who was born in 1961. She later married the actor and dramaturge Hasso von Lenski, who, among other things, was the director of the Little Revue in the Friedrichstadt-Palast in Berlin.
