Who and what was Germany looking for? Google’s annual review shows which celebrities and search terms were trending in 2024.

The year 2024 at Google was dominated by politics and sports. This is shown by an evaluation for the search engine giant’s annual review. However, when it comes to the hottest people, one German entertainment veteran stands out above all others. Stefan Raab (58), who celebrated his comeback in front of the TV cameras in 2024, takes first place in the list of personalities for whom search interest increased the most in 2024 compared to the previous year.

Raab entered the TV ring for the third time in September against former boxing world champion Regina Halmich (48). Since then, he has been making headlines with, among other things, a new show format and is also involved in the next ESC preliminary decision as jury chairman. After that, things get directly political with the personalities. Kamala Harris (60), who was defeated by Donald Trump (78, fourth place) in the US election, is ranked second. In between, the current US President Joe Biden (82) is in third place.

Former racing driver Ralf Schumacher (49) attracted a lot of attention this year with his coming out and is in fifth place, while his ex-wife, Cora Schumacher (47), is in seventh place. Pietro Lombardi (32) is in sixth place. The singer was in the headlines for weeks after a violent argument between him and his fiancée, Laura Maria Rypa, led to a police operation in October. Toni Kroos (34), who ended his great football career in 2024, is in eighth place. Search interest for megastar Taylor Swift (34) has also increased again – she lands on number nine. Soccer star Jamal Musiala (21) completes the top ten

The trendiest TV personalities and the headlines of the year

It goes without saying that Raab also tops the list of popular TV personalities in Germany. Behind him are mainly celebrities who are known through reality TV formats or who have recently been brought to the attention of a wider public through them. In second place is David Ortega (39), who took part in “I’m a Star – Showdown of the Jungle Legends” in the summer. Silvia Wollny (59) takes bronze. The remaining places are occupied by Sarah Knappik (38), Kader Loth (51), Giulia Siegel (50), Kim Virginia (29), Hanka Rackwitz (55), Fabio Knez and No Angels singer Lucy Diakovska (48).

In the general search terms, king football once again dominated first place with “European Football Championship”, followed by “European Handball Championship” and “US election” in second and third place. The late Franz Beckenbauer (1945-2024) is in fourth place, ahead of “European Union Election Results”, “Olympia” and Stefan Raab. “Archery Paralympics” lands on number eight. “Solingen” is in ninth place – presumably due to a devastating attack in August – and in tenth place is One Direction star Liam Payne (1993-2024), who died in October.

The headlines were also about the “US election” in first place and “Solingen” in second place. The “farmer protests” are in third place and the hype about “Dubai chocolate” is in fourth place. The other places are occupied by “Iran”, “Railway Strike”, “Northern Lights Germany”, “Floods in Southern Germany”, “Ringella” and the drama about the “Traffic Light”.

In the trending “why”, “what” and “how” questions, users also wanted to have political and sporting questions clarified in many cases. These included: “Why are the farmers on strike?”, “Why did… Lindner fired?”, “What is the question of trust?”, “How long does the Olympics last?” or “What is offside?”.

Google’s annual review determines the search trends of the year and shows a particularly strong increase in search interest during a certain period in different categories compared to the previous year.
