He caused one of the biggest media scandals in the Federal Republic: the former “Stern” employee Gerd Heidemann has died.
The former “Stern” reporter Gerd Heidemann (1931-2024) is dead. The alleged discoverer of the fake diaries of Adolf Hitler (1889-1945) died on December 9th in a Hamburg hospital, among other things and citing Heidemanns Report to friends and family. A cause of death is not given. He was 93 years old.
Scandal over alleged “Hitler diaries”
On April 25, 1983, Heidemann, who had worked for “Stern” since 1955, presented diaries that Adolf Hitler was said to have written. A short time later, excerpts were printed in “Stern”. But the whole thing turned out to be a fake by Konrad Kujau (1938-2000). The “Stern” was embarrassed as a result. Director Helmut Dietl (1944-2015) filmed the story in the satire “Schtonk!”. Lars Eidinger (48) most recently played Heidemann in the RTL+ miniseries “Faking Hitler”.
In 1985, Heidemann was sentenced to four years and eight months in prison for embezzling around two million DM from the deal involving the fake diaries. The publishing house Gruner + Jahr provided him with 9.3 million marks for the purchase.
Before the scandal surrounding the alleged “Hitler diaries,” Heidemann worked for “Stern,” among other things, as a war reporter and reported from theaters of war on the African continent. In 1965 he won the “World Press Photo” award.
