Jim Carrey on his acting comeback: Actor “needs the money”

Jim Carrey (62) can be seen in the video game adaptation “Sonic the Hedgehog 3”. After “Sonic the Hedgehog 2” from 2022, the actor actually wanted to completely withdraw from the acting business. But for part three he broke his word. On the red, in this case blue, carpet at the film’s UK premiere in London, the actor revealed to a reporter how it came about.

“I came back to this universe because, firstly, I get to play a genius. […] And, I bought a lot of stuff and I need the money, to be honest.” Jim Carrey once again embodies Dr. Robotnik, the eternal adversary of the supersonic hedgehog, as in the first two “Sonic” films. The mad scientist had, at least in of the video game original, created Shadow in an experiment that went wrong. Now he has to team up with Sonic to stop his creature.

In April 2022, according to media reports, Jim Carrey said in a TV interview with “Access Hollywood”: “I’m retiring. I’m relatively serious about it.” The actor has lived in seclusion for years and devotes himself, among other things, to painting. “I like my quiet life,” Carrey continued in the interview. “And I like putting color on the canvas. And I like my spiritual life.” He’s had enough now. “I have done enough. I am enough for myself.”

Maybe he’ll move on at some point, he said at the time. “But I’m taking a break.” A return depends on certain circumstances. “If Engel brought me a script written in gold ink that said people absolutely had to see the film, then maybe.” The latter statement was probably an “exaggeration,” as Carrey noted in the current interview on the red carpet.

“Sonic the Hedgehog 3” is scheduled to open in German cinemas on December 25th.
