The villain Clayface will come to the cinema from a script written by the filmmaker of Doctor Sleep.
After the success of the series of HBO The PenguinDC Studios has officially given the green light to a film focused on Clayface, Batman’s shape-shifting villain, from a script written by the filmmaker. Doctor Sleep, Mike Flanaganaccording to a source with direct knowledge of the production. Plot details are scarce, but filming is expected to begin early next year.

Flanagan, who first pitched a Clayface project to DC Studios in 2023, tweeted in 2021 that he was “really interested in making a standalone Clayface movie as a horror/thriller/tragedy movie.” But he has already committed to writing and directing a new version of The exorcist for Universal, through Blumhouse and Morgan Creek, and is also developing a series adaptation of the novel by Stephen King Carrie for Amazon MGM Studios. DC has therefore been on the hunt for a director to take the reins, and an announcement is imminent.
Who is Clayface in the Batman universe?
One of Batman’s earliest antagonists, Clayface has gone through several iterations since he was introduced in 1940, as a failed actor who turns to crime wearing the clay mask of a character he once played. The character’s shape-shifting abilities were first introduced in 1961, and he has been portrayed in many live-action and animated adaptations of “Batman,” including Ron Perlman in Batman: The Animated Series in the 1990s, for Brian McManamon in the 2010 Fox series Gothamand more recently by Alan Tudyk in Max’s animated comedy harley quinn.

The decision to greenlight the project is the strongest sign yet that DC Studios co-heads, James Gunn and Peter Safranintend for the study to incorporate a wide variety of narrative tones. “One of the main things I want to establish is that anything can be done at DC Studios,” Gunn recently told Variety while talking about his animated series Creature Commandosthe first official title of the new DC Universe. “We can make completely family-friendly content. We can do something that is for the general public, like ‘Superman’. “We can do something that’s violent and sexual, like this… It’s about creating a world where we can tell the story about, you know, one type of character in different genres.”
