The 30th José Carreras Gala brought in over 3.5 million euros. Since its founding, 248 million have been raised for the fight against leukemia.

A visibly moved José Carreras (78) looked back on 30 years of successful gala history on Thursday evening (December 12) in Leipzig. “I am overwhelmed and very grateful for this sustained support from our donors,” said the global star after his Leukemia Foundation’s anniversary show, which MDR broadcast live. At this year’s edition, viewers donated 3,549,283 euros to the fight against blood cancer.

Celebrity support

Alongside TV presenters Stephanie Müller-Spirra (41) and Sven Lorig (53), Carreras led through an evening full of emotional moments. Numerous artists supported the good cause on stage, including ABBAMANIA, Tim Bendzko (39), Rainhard Fendrich (69) and Michael Patrick Kelly (47).

Celebrities such as Klaus Meine (76), Christine Neubauer (62) and Katharina Witt (59) collected donations from viewers over the phone.

30 years serving a good cause

“I would never have dared to dream of it at our first gala in December 1995,” Carreras recalled of the beginning. To date, the foundation has been able to support over 1,500 research and social projects. The anniversary gala increased the total donation volume to an impressive 248 million euros.

Dr. Ulrike Serini, Managing Director of the José Carreras Leukemia Foundation, emphasized the importance of the long-standing commitment: “The José Carreras Gala is an encouragement. Thanks to medical progress, more and more patients can be saved and start a second, healthy life.”

The gala can be accessed in the ARD media library for the next 30 days. If you would still like to donate, you can still do so via the donation line on 01802 400 100.

José Carreras himself had leukemia

The Spanish tenor himself survived a bout with leukemia in 1987. Out of gratitude for his healing, he founded the foundation in 1995, which has since supported the construction of research and treatment facilities and the promotion of young scientists.

In 2019, the José Carreras Leukemia Foundation was named Science Foundation of the Year by the German University Foundation and the Stifterverband.
