What was once the Karosta military prison has now been converted into a hotel. The detail? Nothing changed.
During the 20th century, both the Nazis and the Soviets used Karosta Prison -located in a neighborhood of the city of Liepaja, the third largest in Latvia- as military prisonwhere hundreds of prisoners died, many of them from a shot to the head.

That same site remains intact, but with a slight change: now it has been converted into a hoteland guests who go there will not find an ordinary stay. Because not only can you take a tour and walk around the museum, but you can also you can spend the night behind bars.

What is Hotel Karosta like?
Unlike luxury hotels, the Karosta has cells as roomsin which you can see thin mattresses on the floor. Furthermore, the experience includes treatment as a prisoner of the time; screaming in your face, noises in the middle of the night, cleaning toilets with toothbrushes and cold showers. The special dish of the house – the only one – is bread with tea.
“We opened in 2003 with ‘Behind Bars,’ an interactive two-hour show that gives visitors a genuine prison experience.
