Steven Gätjen: That’s something he can’t miss at Christmas

This is a must for him at Christmas

Steven Gätjen reveals his favorite Christmas films. “Something for the heart, something to laugh about and a beautiful classic” can be found underneath.

Ugly Christmas sweaters, a flashing Christmas tree and lots of Christmas films are a must for Steven Gätjen (52) at Christmas. “I love the run-up to Christmas,” enthuses the presenter as part of Ring’s Christmas campaign, in which Gätjen’s favorite Christmas film “Home Alone” plays a special role. Based on the cult hit, creators try to earn their gifts – they have to solve puzzles and overcome (smart) security precautions.

When it comes to gifts, the TV star has already taken precautions for a long time. “I’ve gotten into the habit of making a list all year long of the wishes that family and friends express throughout the year,” reveals Gätjen, giving insights into a very special Christmas tradition.

Dear Steven, are you in the Christmas spirit yet? What is the best thing for you in the run-up to Christmas?

Steven Gätjen: Absolutely – I love the run-up to Christmas! Even if you have a lot to do at work, a visit to the Christmas market is a must. I also love “Ugly Christmas Sweaters” and bought a few new ones this year. I’m looking forward to Christmas, to having time to look back on the year, to enjoy the time at home, to eat lots of delicious things, to unwind a bit. For me, Christmas can never be colorful and kitschy enough.

Have you already bought all the presents?

Gätjen: As a presenter, I travel a lot and also shop for my Christmas presents online. I’ve gotten into the habit of making a list all year long of the wishes that family and friends express throughout the year. Then I am well prepared and everyone is happy because they are wishes that have finally been fulfilled or have been forgotten and are now a great surprise.

As a film expert, which Christmas films are a must watch every year for you?

Gätjen: I love “Home Alone” because Kevin has to be so creative in protecting himself from burglars and his parents don’t know if he’s okay. Today Kevin would probably send his parents a WhatsApp message and the burglars would be caught straight away with a smart alarm system or a Ring security camera. I also like “Love Actually”, “Schöne Bescherung” and “Isn’t life beautiful? Something for the heart, something to laugh about and a beautiful classic.

There doesn’t seem to be anything really new when it comes to Christmas films that have cult potential for years. Or is the impression misleading?

Gätjen: There are new Christmas films coming out every year that I really enjoy watching. Not everything has to have cult potential, sometimes it’s just enough to be a nice Christmas film that gets you in the Christmas spirit.

You were born in America, grew up in Hamburg and lived for several years in Los Angeles, Washington and New York. Do you celebrate Christmas in a typically American or typically German way? Which traditions are particularly close to your heart?

Gätjen: We have a tradition that is neither American nor German, it’s called “The Gift of the Last Hour.” You go out again on Christmas Eve morning and buy one last present; every year someone else gets it. In addition, a kitschy, flashing, extremely colorful Christmas tree is an absolute must, it’s just a must for me.

With the Christmas season the final spurt for 2024 begins. What is your personal balance for the year?

Gätjen: 2024 was a great year. All I can say is “I’m a lucky man”. So many great things happened and it was very fulfilling professionally. On the other hand, it is just as important that my loved ones and I are healthy. I have a great circle of friends who are always there for me. I’m very grateful and just enjoying this wonderful time.

What do you want for 2025?

Gätjen: Simply that it continues like this. There are always challenges, but I am ready to overcome them. I’m looking forward to new impressions, I want to create memories and look back on 2025 with the same satisfaction as I do now on 2024.
