The “Kevin” Christmas films are cult – and so is the film house. Lead actor Macaulay Culkin almost bought it.

Macaulay Culkin (44) revealed during an appearance in Illinois that he had thought about buying the house from his hit film “Home Alone”. The real estate from the Christmas classic was for sale this year. The actor even had big plans for it.

He dreamed of a “cinema fun house”

“I was almost planning on buying it,” the former child star said at a screening at the Rosemont Theater, according to the New York Times. He didn’t want to move into the property in Winnetka near Chicago himself. Instead, he said, he wanted to turn it into something as iconic as the 1990 film: a “cinema funhouse” where people could reenact scenes. Like the one in which his character Kevin McCallister sledded down the stairs.

Macaulay Culkin ultimately didn’t put the idea into practice. And for good reason. “I have kids. I’m busy, man,” he said. Culkin has two young sons with his fiancée Brenda Song (36).

The “Kevin” ruble is still rolling

Even 34 years after the success of “Home Alone”, which received a sequel two years later with “Kevin – Alone in New York”, the former child star benefits from the films. He was back on the Home Alone: A Nostalgic Night with Macaulay Culkin tour until December 15th. There are film screenings and the main actor answers questions from the audience.

He also recently filmed , in which he imitated Kevin McCallister. As the actor sits by the fire wearing his familiar white “Kevin” sweater, he looks into the distance and explains, “I can’t remember the last time I had the house to myself over the holidays.”

Home was offered for $5.25 million

In May 2024 it was announced that the legendary McCallister residence near Chicago was for sale. After twelve years, the current residents put the brick house on the market for $5.25 million. The couple bought the villa, built in 1921, in 2012 for $1.585 million and extensively renovated it. But they would have kept the front door and the famous stairs on which Kevin sleds.

The house is a real magnet for film fans from all over the world. The residents had already taken advantage of the popularity a few years ago and offered a night in the original location on the booking platform Airbnb in December 2021.
