Nicolas Sarkozy was finally sentenced to wear an ankle bracelet for corruption.
France’s ex-President Nicolas Sarkozy (69) was legally sentenced to a one-year prison sentence in the form of wearing an electronic ankle bracelet. The Court of Cassation, France’s highest court, confirmed a ruling by the Paris Court of Appeal from 2023. Sarkozy was sentenced to a total of three years in prison, two of which were suspended, for corruption. The conservative politician is the first ex-president of France to be sentenced to a prison sentence without parole.
Sarkozy plans to appeal to the Court of Human Rights
Sarkozy wanted to accept the punishment, said his lawyer Patrice Spinosi (52). But at the same time he wants to appeal to the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg. This would have no suspensive effect on the penalties.
The 69-year-old politician was originally found guilty in 2021 of bribing a judge and thus exerting unauthorized influence on an ongoing investigation against him. According to the ruling, Sarkozy’s civil rights are also suspended for three years. The former right-wing strongman, who is still seen by many as a shining light, will therefore no longer be able to run in elections.
Sarkozy was President of France from 2007 to 2012. He has been married to model and singer Carla Bruni (56) for the third time since 2008.
