Inequality grows: income distribution recorded its worst third quarter since 2021

The inequality in Argentina recorded its worst record for a third quarter since the exit of the pandemic in 2021as a consequence of the advance of precarious employment and the delay in wages. The Gini coefficient grew from 0.434 to the 0.435 in that period compared to the same period in 2023, as reported by the National Institute of Statistics and Censuses (INDEC).

The evolution of income distribution showed that between July and September, the calculated gap between the extremes of high and low income was 14 times.

The report shows that the 10% of the population with the highest per capita family income concentrated 32.4% of the total income in the third quarter of 2024, that is, 18 times more than the 10% with the lowest income.

“The tendency to inflationary slowdown, despite the outdated weights of the basket with which the CPI is estimated, “may tend to consolidate these levels of distribution, since there is no update of real wages”assured the economist Pablo Ferrari. “Zero inflation to stabilize, it is a statue,” he noted.

Due to the fall in salaries, the increase in the rate of employed jobseekers is increasing and in the third quarter it registered a significant increase of 2.4 pp (15.2% vs. 17.6%).
