He supported her every day: After her marriage to Gerard Piqué ended, Shakira could count on her friendship with Chris Martin.

Shakira (47) was able to count on the support of her good friend Chris Martin (47) during the separation phase from her husband. As the singer revealed about the Coldplay frontman, her music colleague was there for her as a friend after she separated from her husband Gerard Piqué (37) in 2022.

“He checked on me every day”

Martin was a great help to her during this time: “He was there for me when I broke up and my heart was broken,” said Shakira, who has been friends with the 47-year-old for a long time. “He checked on me every day to see how I was doing, sent me words of support, strength and wisdom.” For her, he is a person who sees life through a different lens. Martin is very sensitive to the needs of other people. He is very empathetic, says Shakira.

Shakira made her separation from Piqué public in 2022. She had previously been in a relationship with him for eleven years. The couple has two children together, sons Milan (11) and Sasha (9).

In the year after Piqué and Shakira’s separation, rumors about the ex-soccer star’s alleged cheating made the rounds. In a song with DJ Bizarrap at the end of last year, the Colombian sang to her ex and his new partner Marti: “I was too much for you, that’s why you’re now with someone who’s more like you […] You swapped a Ferrari for a Twingo. You swapped a Rolex for a Casio.”

Shakira experienced “the greatest suffering” of her life

In July 2024, the singer dedicated her own cover story. In the accompanying interview, Shakira also looked back on her separation and talked about how much she suffered from it. “The suffering I felt was probably the greatest I had ever experienced in my entire life. It prevented me from functioning at times.” It felt like someone had stabbed a hole in her chest.

In this conversation, too, she indicated that she had been supported by several of her colleagues. In addition to Chris Martin, she was also supported by John Mayer (47), Adele (36) and the Colombian singer and actor Carlos Vives (63) as well as the singer and guitarist Joan Luis Guerra (67).
