An honor for the “greatest German footballer”: From the 2025/2026 season, the Supercup will be renamed in honor of Franz Beckenbauer.

Franz Beckenbauer (1945-2024) receives another tribute from German football: from the 2025/26 season onwards, the Supercup will be named after the “greatest German footballer of all time” and will in future be called the Franz Beckenbauer Supercup.

At the annual duel between the German champions and the DFB Cup winners, organized by the DFL, the winner has been honored with a specially created trophy since 2010. Starting next year, the event will have a new logo and appearance in honor of Beckenbauer. The game’s supporting program should also be adjusted accordingly if necessary, it is said.

Widow is sure: “Franz would like it”

Heidi Beckenbauer, the widow of the football legend who died in January 2024, says in the statement that Beckenbauer would have liked the game to be named after him. DFB President Bernd Neuendorf (63) said that it was important to him personally to “honor and appreciate the achievements and life’s work of Franz Beckenbauer.” He is further quoted as saying: “By renaming the Supercup, we are now creating a visible connection between Franz Beckenbauer and football in its entirety.”

On January 7, 2024, soccer star Franz Beckenbauer, celebrated as “Kaiser Franz,” died at the age of 78. Hans-Joachim Watzke (65), spokesman for the DFL executive committee, paid tribute to him during the renaming of the Supercup with the words: “Franz Beckenbauer was a child of the Bundesliga. Hardly anyone has shaped it as much as he did.”
