King Frederik expressed his condolences in a letter after the attack in Magdeburg. He was “deeply dismayed”.
It’s not just Germany that is in disbelief after the attack on the Christmas market in Magdeburg on Friday evening (December 20th). King Frederik X of Denmark (56) expressed his condolences in a letter to German Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier (68).
“Deeply dismayed”
In the letter on Saturday, addressed to “His Excellency Mr. Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier,” it says in German: “Deeply shocked by the tragic attack yesterday evening in Magdeburg, I express my most sincere condolences to you and the German people.” And further: “My thoughts are with the victims, their families and friends. May they receive comfort and strength during this difficult time.”
After the attack in Magdeburg on Friday evening, in which a car drove into the Christmas market, the number of deaths has now risen to five. According to authorities, there are also hundreds of injured.
King Frederik and his wife Mary (52) visited Germany in October and were welcomed by Steinmeier and his wife Elke Büdenbender (62). The reason for the trip was the 25th anniversary of the Nordic Embassies in Berlin.
Celebrities react after attack
In addition to the Danish king, several celebrities also reacted to the attack. Among other things, Tokio Hotel drummer Gustav Schäfer (36) spoke up after he had recently been to the Christmas market himself.
English national soccer player and FC Bayern star Harry Kane (31), “hearing the news of the tragedy in Magdeburg puts things into perspective and on nights like these, football is not the most important thing. My thoughts and condolences are with you “to all those affected by the terrible tragedy”.
