The 16 survivors were players of the Old Christians Rugby team. They had begun the trip in Montevideo aboard a Uruguayan Air Force plane heading to Chile. There they would play a series of friendly matches, so they were accompanied by family and friends. There were a total of 45 people on the plane, including the crew.
It was a pilot error that caused the brutal collision with the summits, and it was due to the weather conditions. 12 people died on impact, and later 17 more in the shipwreck. Most of them due to a snow avalanche from which they could not escape.
