Shortly before Christmas there is another special day in the Swedish royal family: Queen Silvia will be 81 years old.
Queen Silvia of Sweden will celebrate her 81st birthday on December 23, 2024. The palace also published a colorful portrait of the monarch. But there won’t be a big celebration.
21 gun salute for the Queen
it said in the morning: “Her Majesty the Queen turns 81 today.” The palace reminded: “The Queen’s birthday is a public flag day. The birthday is also an official salute day.” Therefore, 21 shots will be fired from the “Skeppsholmen salute station in Stockholm and from the salute stations in Boden, Härnösand, Karlskrona and Gothenburg”. The birthday post for the wife of King Carl XVI. Gustaf (78) also included a photo that shows the monarch smiling in pink clothing during a public appearance.
Private celebration with all grandchildren
As positive as the picture appears, the festival is reportedly a little smaller today, reports. After the big 80th birthday party, only the closest family is courting her today. The newspaper quotes the palace’s information manager, Margareta Thorgren: Accordingly, the day should be completely private. Her three children, her partner and all her grandchildren would honor Silvia.
The birthday is overshadowed by concerns about the queen’s health. She had been suffering from a slight cold for about a week and had to cancel the festive meeting of the Swedish Academy on December 20th. The Queen did not want to risk disrupting the event by coughing, explained Margareta Thorgren. This year Silvia was absent more often due to illness. In September she had to cancel appointments due to a cold, and in November she even had to cancel her entire state visit to Singapore due to a respiratory infection. In the spring, she was noticed with a bloodshot eye at the reception of the new Finnish president in Stockholm.
