The show marks the first official entry into the new DC Universe designed by Gunn and co-director Peter Safran.

Creature Commandos the Max animated series, written and executive produced by the co-head of DC Studios, James Gunnwas renewed for a second season on the streaming platform.

The show, about imprisoned non-human monsters recruited to join a covert black ops team, marks the first official entry into the new DC Universe designed by Gunn and co-director Peter Safran. The season 1 finale will debut on January 9.

Creature Commandos will have a second season

“Only James Gunn could have created this wild band of misfit monsters that tug at your heartstrings and compel you to passionately root for them,” Amy Gravitt, head of comedy programming at HBO & Max, said in a statement. “We couldn’t be more thrilled to continue their stories with James, Dean Lorey, Peter Safran and our fantastic partners at DC Studios and Warner Bros. Animation.”

The voice cast for the first season includes Indira Varma like The Bride, Frank Grillo like Rick Flag Sr., David Harbor like Frankenstein, Zoe Chao like Nina Mazursky, Alan Tudyk as Doctor Phosphorus, Sean Gunn like GI Robot and Weasel, Maria Bakalova like Princess Ilana, Steve Agee as Economists and Viola Davis Like Amanda Waller.

“We are thrilled to be working alongside Max for another season of ‘Creature Commandos’ mayhem,” Gunn and Safran said in a statement. “From our spectacular first season of ‘Peacemaker’ to the amazing run of ‘The Penguin’ and the record-breaking release of ‘Creature Commandos,’ Max has consistently exceeded industry expectations and exceeded our wildest imaginations.”

Warner Bros. Animation produced the series along with DC Studios; Safran, Dean Lorey and Sam Register also serve as executive producers, and Rick Morales serves as supervising producer.
