The threat of regaining control over the Panama Canal
Trump, who will take office on January 20, generated a stir last Sunday when he threatened to regain US control over the Panama Canal if the authorities of the Central American country do not reduce the fees they charge for its transit.
The Panamanian president, José Raúl Mulino, repudiated the threat in an institutional message and said that the sovereignty of the transoceanic canal is non-negotiable, something that received the support of several Latin American leaders.
The Panama Canal was built by the United States, which inaugurated it in 1914 and administered it until its transfer to the Panamanian State on December 31, 1999, as established in the Torrijos-Carter Treaties signed on September 7, 1977 in Washington by the then presidents of Panama Omar Torrijos (1929-1981) and American Jimmy Carter (1977-1981).
