And the chances for Steven Spielberg, Jane Campion or Kenneth Branagh seem to be good this year.
The US producers’ association PGA has now announced its ten nominated feature films for the planned awards ceremony on March 19 – which 8,000 producers can now vote on. Top favorites include Spielberg’s film musical “West Side Story”, Denis Villeneuve’s science fiction epic “Dune” and Branagh’s autobiographical Northern Ireland drama “Belfast”. Also in the running are Campion’s western drama “The Power of the Dog”, the satire “Don’t Look Up”, “Tick, Tick … Boom!”, “King Richard”, “Being the Ricardos”, “CODA” and “Licorice Pizza”.
Hollywood’s Association of US Directors had previously announced its candidates for the upcoming DGA Awards on March 12th. New Zealander Campion (“The Power of the Dog”), Hollywood veteran Spielberg (“West Side Story”), Canadian Denis Villeneuve (“Dune”) and Branagh (“Belfast”) are also in the running.
Nothing is fixed, of course, and yet the winners of the respective guild prizes often go on to win the Oscars in the corresponding categories. This also applied to the Chinese director Chloé Zhao last year, who was able to follow the DGA award for “Nomadland” with the director’s Oscar and the PGA trophy with the Oscar statuette for best film.
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will announce on February 8 who can officially enter the race for this year’s Oscars. Then Austria’s candidate for the foreign Oscar, Sebastian Meise’s “Great Freedom”, also has a chance of being nominated, since the drama, which premiered in Cannes and has since won many awards, is on the shortlist of the last 15 works for the category.
