Mariah Carey’s global hit “All I Want for Christmas Is You” is now (also) Germany’s number one record.
“Komet” by Udo Lindenberg and Apache 207 is no longer alone: With 21 weeks at the top of the singles charts, Mariah Carey sets the record as the longest number one hit in Germany with “All I Want for Christmas Is You”. . In total, the song has 106 chart weeks, “Komet” has had around 100 chart weeks so far.
The song “All I Want for Christmas Is You”, which was released 30 years ago, only reached number one for the first time after 25 years – but since then every Christmas time it has been for a few weeks, so that there are now 21 weeks. Lindenberg and Apache all completed their 21 weeks within 2023.
Carey wrote and sang an evergreen song in the early 90s that seems to have become increasingly popular in recent years.
Carey will soon break the number one record in the USA too
In the USA, too, “All I Want for Christmas Is You” was only at number 1 on the Billboard charts for the first time 25 years after its release – in 2019 – as the first Christmas song in 61 years. Five years ago there seems to have been a boost for this song that cannot be explained in more detail.
In the USA, Carey could soon achieve a 19th number one week and would then immediately follow the hits “Old Town Road” by rapper Lil Nas X Feat. Billy Ray Cyrus and “A Bar Song (Tipsy)” by singer-songwriter Shaboozey.
In any case, “All I Want for Christmas Is You” seems to annoy a lot of people a little less than “Last Christmas” by Wham! from 1984, which was considered the ultimate Christmas pop hit for decades and was number one in Germany for a week last week.
One thing is obvious: During Advent there is no escape from “All I Want for Christmas Is You” – at Christmas markets, in department stores, everywhere.
In a recent interview with the Los Angeles Times, Carey said her goal was to create something that would last. “I think when I wrote it I had in mind that I wanted it to be timeless too. I wanted it to feel like a modern classic.”
Carey wrote the song with producer Walter Afanasieff. One anecdote is that the song was written in just 15 minutes. But that’s probably not true; according to Afanasieff, it was more work. In any case, the story of the songwriter duo Carey/Afanasieff is not as harmonious as a Christmas song would ideally be. The two have been at odds for decades.
Every year on November 1st (in 1994 the song was released exactly on November 1st) the break for the song is over. Then the “Queen of Christmas” Mariah Carey posted on social media that the time had come again.
Another anecdote about the song is that Mariah Carey recorded it in the middle of summer and the studio is said to have been decorated with pine greenery and fairy lights to create the right atmosphere.
Before Carey released “All I Want for Christmas Is You” and the album “Merry Christmas” in 1994, she had only released a few other albums. At the time, she thought it was too early in her career for Christmas music because only older people were doing it, she said on a TV show. But her love for the festival changed her mind.
Carey’s favorite line in “All I Want for Christmas Is You” is said to be “I won’t even wish for snow,” because she actually loves snow very much.
