“Romeo and Juliet” actress Olivia Hussey dies
Mourning the loss of actress Olivia Hussey. She died at the age of 73. Most recently, she sued her film production company over a nude scene she performed as a 15-year-old.
“Olivia was a remarkable person whose warmth, wisdom and pure kindness touched the lives of everyone who knew her,” her family said in a message on the actress’ Instagram profile. Hussey is survived by her husband, David Eisley, their three children and one grandchild.
As a 15-year-old, Hussey played Juliet alongside Leonard Whiting in the 1968 version of “Romeo and Juliet” by Italian director Franco Zeffirelli. In 2023, Hussey and Whiting sued the film production company Paramount Pictures for hundreds of millions in damages over a nude scene in the film.

The then 15-year-old Hussey and the then 16-year-old Whiting were briefly seen naked in the later award-winning film. The lawsuit says Zeffirelli, who died in 2019, persuaded them to do the scene and told them that without the scene the film would fail. In addition, the director had previously assured that the actors would not actually be naked, but would be dressed in flesh-colored underwear. The lawsuit was later dismissed by a court.
Hussey and Whiting won Golden Globes for their roles in Romeo and Juliet. Hussey last defended the nude scene in the film in an interview with Variety magazine in 2018, emphasizing that Zeffirelli implemented it tastefully. “She was necessary for the film,” she told the magazine at the time.
