Anthony Hopkins celebrated 49 years without alcohol on Instagram. In a clip he pointed out offers of help for those affected.

Anthony Hopkins (86) celebrated a milestone shortly before his 87th birthday. The actor revealed on Sunday (December 29) that he has been living without alcohol for 49 years to the day. Hopkins noted that he had “so much fun” back then. “But then I realized I was in big, big trouble because I couldn’t remember anything and I was driving drunk,” Hopkins said of his experience.

That day he finally sought help. “I called a group of people who were alcoholics like me. And that was it. Sober,” Hopkins said. He also noted that in his almost 50 years without alcohol he had had more fun “than ever before.”

“One day at a time”

The “Silence of the Lambs” star reminded other affected people that there was “a lot of help.” “It’s not a bad thing – it’s an illness when you’re allergic to alcohol. Get help,” Hopkins said. In his situation, he didn’t realize that there were thousands of other people like him.

“Anyway, I got sober and, it sounds boring, but I’ve had a wonderful life so far. They still employ me, they still give me jobs,” he explained. Hopkins pointed to his 87th birthday on December 31 and said he was enjoying his “unexpectedly long life.” He also celebrated this in his short message under the post. “One day at a time. 49 years. Life is ongoing,” he wrote in his video message.

Hopkins’ videos became a tradition

At the end of the clip, he addressed his followers again. “So if you have a problem, you know where to go. Call a group, a 12-step program, whatever you can do,” he mentioned a selection of offers of help and added in relation to alcohol: ” Because it’s a killer.”

Hopkins has published similar videos in recent years in which he draws attention to alcohol addiction and advises those affected to seek help. “I wish everyone a healthy and successful year 2024. One day at a time, today I am 48 years sober. Life has begun,” in a similar post last year.
