Five charges in the death of pop star Liam Payne
Those responsible for the hotel where the singer fell from a balcony and one of Payne’s companions are accused of negligent homicide. They are said to have left him alone in a defenseless state.
Five people have been charged over the October death of British One Direction singer Liam Payne after falling from a hotel balcony in Argentina.
A representative of the pop star as well as the hotel’s operator and head receptionist were charged with negligent homicide in federal court, the South American country’s public prosecutor’s office announced. Another hotel employee and a waiter are accused of providing Payne with cocaine. The two were taken into custody and face up to 15 years in prison.
On October 16, at the age of 31, Payne fell from the balcony of a room on the third floor of a hotel in the Argentine capital Buenos Aires, where he had been a guest for three days. According to the prosecutor’s office, forensic experts believe it is likely that he passed out while trying to climb over the balcony railing. An autopsy showed he had alcohol and cocaine in large quantities.
Payne was no longer able to stand because he fell
The hotel operator and the head receptionist could receive up to five years in prison. According to the information, Payne’s representative, who accompanied him in Argentina, could face up to 15 years behind bars – in addition to involuntary manslaughter, he was also charged with neglect of a person resulting in death in connection with the supply of narcotics. He violated his duties of care, support and assistance towards Payne.
He left Payne to his fate, even though he knew that the artist was in a state of drunkenness, vulnerability and defenselessness and had previously suffered from alcohol and cocaine addiction.
“Bringing Payne to room 310 in his condition meant a legally unacceptable risk to his life,” the judge said, according to the statement. The pop star was unable to stand in the hotel lobby because of the consumption of various substances.
