Carolin Kebekus: Some people think they are irresponsible

Carolin Kebekus (44) had her first child at the beginning of 2024. Shortly before the turn of the year, among other things, about the pressure of expectations. “Some people write under my videos: The poor child. There is always the accusation that I am irresponsible,” explains the comedian, according to the magazine’s advance report.

“I had unprecedented pain, nothing under control, my body was completely damaged,” Kebekus continues. “What pressure. I needed comedy as an outlet.” Just a few months after the birth she was back on stage, apparently also out of fear for her career: “Financially speaking, I could have bridged a longer break, but there is definitely concern that my career could suffer as a result.”

According to the advance report, before her pregnancy, Kebekus thought that she didn’t just want to make jokes about motherhood. “It didn’t quite work out,” she admits. “But I’m not going to apologize for making jokes about the sickest thing I’ve ever experienced.”

Shortly before Christmas, the comedian had already mentioned how important returning to work was for her. “For me it was the right decision to perform again, it was good for my mental health,” she said. But she is “already well occupied with everything you have to think about with a child”.

Kebekus had already addressed other people’s expectations during her pregnancy. In October 2023: “What I really underestimated is this: ‘Yeah, wait and see’.” Back then, this came particularly from women “who had already experienced it all”. Kebekus asked himself: “Huh, where does this spite come from now? Since when have we stopped being friends? What’s going on here?”

The comedian was asked, among other things, whether she was feeling sick, whether she could still sleep or whether she already had water in her legs. “It’s all going to be terrible. You’ll never be able to sleep again, you’ll never be able to go out again,” she heard. Kebekus summarized the change in conversations about her pregnancy as follows: “Before you’re pregnant, everyone says: ‘Oh, do that. Have children. It’ll be so nice.’ And then when you’re pregnant: ‘Welcome to Hell!'”
