Heinz Hoenig has had difficult months in the hospital. His wife firmly believed that she would take him home again.

The year 2024 was an extremely difficult one for actor Heinz Hoenig (73) and his wife, Annika Kärsten-Hoenig (39). He had to spend several months in the hospital before he was able to return home in September. It shows how difficult this time really was for the couple, who have two small sons.

Heinz Hoenig’s mother taught him to cry

“The children are a source of strength. They love me. Everything else doesn’t matter,” the actor explained. It is said that Hoenig cried several times during the conversation. But that’s not a problem for him: “My mother taught me to cry as a boy. She always said: ‘You don’t have to be afraid, you can cry.'”

Heinz Hoenig and his wife Annika said “probably ten times a day how much we love each other,” says Kärsten-Hoenig. “Eleven times!” he replies. “My wife is the best thing that could have happened to me. We never talked about the fact that things could go wrong. Not even about death. I don’t want that at all. I can’t leave Annika and the children alone.”

Annika Kärsten-Hoenig wanted to “take Heinzi home alive again”

Kärsten-Hoenig also remembers the difficult 2024: “I still remember in the summer in Berlin when Heinz was in a coma before the first operation. At that time, all the doctors expressed to me how hopeless his situation was.” Even a palliative care team was called in. Since she herself has provided end-of-life care for a long time, she knows “what that means.” But she didn’t want to hear about it. “I’m not talking to you,” she said. “I have the utmost respect for you, but I know it’s not time yet.” She was sure that she would “take Heinzi home alive again”.

The daily newspaper met the actor and his wife before the turn of the year. In one, Hoenig still has to undergo an operation on the aorta. The operation is planned for 2025, but an exact date has not yet been given. “I feel good. Actually, as good as before. With an aorta and heart disease, I don’t want to hear that now,” said the star. According to him, being sick begins in the head.

Heinz Hoenig and Annika Kärsten-Hoenig have been married since 2019 and their sons were born in 2020 and 2022. Hoenig has been working as an actor for decades. He became particularly famous for Wolfgang Petersen’s (1941-2022) “Das Boot” in the early 1980s. This was followed by roles in productions such as “The King of St. Pauli” and “The Shadow Man”.
