King Frederik and Queen Mary of Denmark hosted the New Year’s reception at Amalienborg Palace for the first time. They made for a glamorous appearance.

The banquet, which according to the Instagram post has taken place “with a few exceptions since the royal family entered Amalienborg in 1700,” attracted other members of the Danish royals. Pictures of the guests show Frederik and Mary’s son, Crown Prince Christian of Denmark (19), who also dressed up in a black tailcoat. Frederik’s mother Margrethe II (84) chose a robe in cobalt blue, her sister Princess Benedikte (80) appeared in an elegant dress in dark purple. Frederik’s brother Prince Joachim (55) and his wife Princess Marie (48) were also invited.

On the Elephant Order’s day of honor, the members all wore the order “in a chain of honor,” as explained in the Instagram post. “The Order of the Elephant, which dates back to the 15th century, is not only the most beautiful, but also the oldest Danish royal knightly order. It is known for its characteristic enameled elephant set with diamonds. The king also wears the chain of the Dannebrog Order.”

First New Year’s speech as King of Denmark
