In an interview with “GQ”, the actor talks about grief, friends – and the realization that you can’t look for outside recognition forever.
Actor Andrew Garfield (41) appreciates emotional openness among men. “I’m very proud of the male relationships I have in my life,” the “Spider-Man” actor told the British edition of GQ magazine. In the interview he said that he had a chat group with several men.
“What unites us is a longing for a life full of vibrancy and truth and honesty,” Garfield said. Responding to the comment that not many men have such open dialogue with friends, he replied: “I know. That’s rare.”
His new film “We Live in Time” with Florence Pugh tells of a couple in love and a difficult diagnosis. Garfield himself has spoken about grief after his mother died of cancer. Do people come up to him today to talk about grief, and is that a burden? “No,” said Garfield. “It’s a privilege.” He wants to feel as connected to people and life as possible.
In the past, he often needed recognition from outside. When he was nominated for an award, he felt great – and when he lost, he felt like shit. He doesn’t want to live like that. “I can’t be so dependent on things that are out of my control.”
