Hollywood stars, icons of the fashion world and a famous monkey researcher: Shortly before the end of his term in office, US President Joe Biden wants to honor 19 celebrities with the USA’s highest civilian award. The so-called Medal of Freedom will be awarded on Saturday to, among others, soccer star Lionel Messi, basketball legend Earvin “Magic” Johnson, fashion designer Ralph Lauren, actors Michael J. Fox and Denzel Washington and rock musician Bono from the band U2, the White House said .

The prestigious Presidential Medal of Freedom honors people who have made a significant contribution “to the security or national interest of the United States, world peace, and cultural or other significant public concerns.” This year they also include primatologist Jane Goodall, billionaire and philanthropist George Soros, fashion journalist Anna Wintour and former Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton, a party friend of Biden’s.
