Intense search for a young man who disappeared in the Río de la Plata: he was swept away by the current

Family members described his characteristics as having a thin build and a dark complexion. The operation began on Saturday, still without results.

Martin Nunez23 years old, has been searched intensively since this Saturday morning, after go swimming in the Río de la Plata during yesterday afternoon. The young man had been taking a sailboat ride since San Fernando when at the time of his disappearanceat kilometer 2500, decided to jump into the water.

The missing young man was on the boat, his partner and a friendwho was in charge. Núñez chose to swim for a while to cool off, without life jacket and, minutes later, it was carried away by the current.

His father, Cristian, notified the authorities after the young man’s companions alerted him to what happened. Under that line, he revealed the message that his son had sent him: “I’m surfing, dad. I’ll be back home later.” In addition, he recounted the moment he found out: “They called me from my son’s phone and it was the girlfriend who told me: ‘Martín jumped into the water and doesn’t come out’he said. “There was a lot of wind, you couldn’t hear much”.

Likewise, he commented that his son’s friend, Gastón, tried to save him when he saw the difficulty that Martín was suffering: “I know that he was trying to swim and couldn’t get there. He jumped in to try to grab him and they were both sinking. He who could to get out of that situation was Gastón.”

How the operation for the disappearance continues

This Saturday morning the search began, which is being carried out by the Argentine Naval Prefecture. The operation to find the young man was inland, with negative results until the afternoon. In case of not obtaining news in the rest of the day, they clarified that tomorrow they will continue with the same procedure: “It will only be carried out during daylight hours,” sources told the media. “Once the emergency protocol is activated, they intervene and we deploy the corresponding means and personnel. On the water there are currently jet skis, a boat with qualified rescue and diving personnel in an area that is delimited through the information provided to us, in this case, by the Olivos Prefecture,” explained subprefect Federico Romero, head of the Tigre Rescue, Fire and Environmental Protection Station in TN.

“There may be several possibilities of what could have happened. He didn’t have his vest on. That can be a negative factor at the time of what happened,” explained Bruno Martinolli, the person in charge of the PNA Olivos search.
