British drag artist James Lee Williams, known as The Vivienne, has died suddenly aged just 32.

In 2019, British drag artist James Lee Williams (1992-2025), better known by the stage name The Vivienne, rose to prominence as the first winner of the British edition of the US reality show “RuPaul’s Drag Race”. As his spokesman Simon Jones announced on Sunday, January 5, Williams died at the weekend aged just 32.

Death of a “warm-hearted and amazing” artist

Jones wrote of the drag icon’s tragic passing: “It is with great sadness that we inform you that our beloved James Lee Williams, The Vivienne, passed away this weekend. James was an incredibly loved, warm and amazing human being. His family is heartbroken about the loss of her son, brother and uncle.”

The press spokesman has not yet announced any further details about the unexpected death of James Lee Williams. In his message he simply added a request to give the family the time and privacy they now need to process and grieve the blow of fate.

Fashion designer Vivienne Westwood as inspiration

Williams was born in North Wales in 1992 and moved to Liverpool at the age of 16, where he joined the local drag scene. His stage name The Vivienne was inspired by the legendary fashion designer Vivienne Westwood (1941-2022), whose clothes he loved to wear at the time. After his victory on “RuPaul’s Drag Race”, he took part in numerous other reality shows in the UK and USA, but also released several singles between 2020 and 2022.
