On January 7, 2024, Walter Beckenbauer had to say goodbye to his brother Franz. Now he revealed how he deals with his grief.
January 7, 2025 marks the first anniversary of the death of football legend Franz Beckenbauer (1945-2024). The global star left a huge void not only in the football world, but also in his family. His big brother Walter Beckenbauer (83) continues to remember him in a very personal way.
“I highly valued Franz, but never idolized him”
In a rare statement, the media-shy Bavarian said on the occasion of the first anniversary of his death: “I highly valued Franz, but never idolized him. I love him very much. His death doesn’t change that.” He also revealed that he continues to have a spiritual conversation with his brother, which helps him deal with his death.
“Sometimes I have a spontaneous conversation with him,” says Walter Beckenbauer. “And expect his answers with a smile. Because I knew him so well, I know what he would say if I asked him something in my head.” For him, the idolized football legend always remained just his brother.
Walter Beckenbauer decided against a football career
Walter Beckenbauer, like his famous brother, was also extremely enthusiastic about football at a young age and played for the FC Bayern Munich student team as a teenager before moving to the rival SC Munich 1906. In contrast to his brother Franz, he later decided against sport and began an apprenticeship as a printer.
