The number of cinema tickets sold in Germany fell in 2024. The consequences of the Hollywood strike and the economic situation are challenging the industry – but the Christmas business gives hope.
According to information from industry associations, people in Germany went to cinemas less often last year than in 2023. According to preliminary figures, German film theaters would have sold a total of 80.9 million tickets in 2024, reported the Main Association of German Film Theaters (HDF Kino) and the Allscreens Association Relying on an industry analysis service. Compared to 2023, this is a decline in visitors of 7.3 percent.
The market share of German films based on tickets sold is a good 19 percent, which is at the same level as the previous year. In view of the consequences of the Hollywood strike in the summer of 2023, which caused the postponement of some film releases in this country, and a generally tense economic situation, the cinema year will remain stable overall.
“The cinema year 2024 has shown that the industry remains resilient even in difficult times and can score points with convincing offers,” said Christine Berg, CEO of HDF Kino, according to the statement. However, film theaters need planning security and political support. Investments in modernized cinemas are the key.
These were the most popular films
The cinema year ended with a successful Christmas business. On the last cinema weekend of 2024, the strongest result of the year was achieved with 2.1 million tickets sold, it said.
The five most popular films last year included the animated films “Inside Out 2”, “Despicable Me 4” and “Moana 2”. The Marvel blockbuster “Deadpool & Wolverine” and the science fiction drama “Dune: Part Two” also performed well at the box office. Among the German-language films in 2024, “The School of Magical Animals 3” attracted the most visitors.
