Ten years after the attack on the satirical magazine “Charlie Hebdo”, Emmanuel Macron took part in a memorial event.
On January 7, 2025, France commemorated the victims of the attack on the editorial office of the French satirical magazine “Charlie Hebdo”. Among other things, the country commemorated the twelve people who were murdered in the attack ten years ago as part of a memorial event.
Those present included French President Emmanuel Macron (47), several members of the government and Anne Hidalgo (65), the mayor of Paris. Macron was accompanied by his wife Brigitte (71). The names of the victims were read out during the memorial ceremony. Afterwards there was a minute’s silence and the French national anthem, the Marseillaise, was played. A memorial wreath was also laid. There was no speech by Macron; the victims’ relatives spoke out against it.
Olaf Scholz speaks of a “barbaric attack”
Olaf Scholz (66), among others, also commented on the tenth anniversary of the attack. the Chancellor wrote of a “barbaric attack” after which the hashtag “#JesuisCharlie” went around the world ten years ago. And further: “We feel for our French friends today as we did back then. The attack was on our common values of freedom and democracy – we will never accept that.” After the attack, many people around the world protested under the slogan “Je suis Charlie” [dt. “Ich bin Charlie”] Solidarity expressed.
Two attackers killed twelve people, including several well-known French cartoonists, in the terrorist attack in January 2015. Published on the anniversary. The cover is headlined “Indestructible” and features a caricature of a reader riding a gun.
