The folk band had a big hit in 1969 with “Leaving on a Jet Plane”. Now only a third of the trio is still alive.
US folk singer Peter Yarrow from the trio “Peter, Paul and Mary” has died at the age of 86. The band enjoyed success in the 1960s, including 1969’s “Leaving on a Jet Plane”, written by John Denver. A cover of Bob Dylan’s “Blowing in the Wind” also made it high up the charts.
Yarrow died surrounded by his family, a spokesman confirmed at the request of the German Press Agency. The singer was born in New York in 1939, where he died on Tuesday from complications of bladder cancer, the New York Times reported.
“He always believed with all his heart that singing together could change the world,” said daughter Bethany Yarrow through the spokesman. “Please don’t stop believing in magic dragons,” she said, referring to one of the trio’s hits, “Puff, the Magic Dragon.”
Of the trio who first appeared publicly in 1961, only Noel “Paul” Stookey is still alive. Singer Mary Travers died in 2009.
