Déjà vu in Southern California: celebrity villas are also threatened again and stars are fleeing the conflagration. Jamie Lee Curtis describes a “terrible situation”.
Oscar winner Jamie Lee Curtis fears for her neighborhood in Pacific Palisades, “Star Wars” actor Mark Hamill has fled his villa in Malibu: The devastating forest fires in the Los Angeles area have driven tens of thousands of people from their homes, including many celebrities residents.
“My community and possibly my home is burning,” Jamie Lee Curtis wrote on Instagram. She and her family are safe, but many of her friends will lose their homes. “It’s a terrible situation,” she added, thanking all the firefighters and helpers. Neighborhood help is now more important than ever.
Curtis (66) was among a number of stars nominated for awards by Hollywood’s Screen Actors Guild on Wednesday. She is in the running for best supporting actress for her role in “The Last Showgirl.” Due to the precarious weather conditions in Southern California, the planned live event of the nomination ceremony was canceled and the list was announced in writing.
Celebrities are fleeing
Mark Hamill, 73, told his Instagram followers that he left his Malibu home “at the last minute.” He had already seen flames on the side of the road.
Actor James Woods (77) described chaos on the streets in an interview with CNN. All the houses on his street had already burned. They would have had to flee to safety. Woods let his followers on X know that he was safe. “At this moment I don’t know whether our house is still standing,” he wrote on the short message service.
Pacific Palisades is an affluent neighborhood in western Los Angeles with around 25,000 residents. Stars like Jennifer Aniston, Bradley Cooper, Tom Hanks and Reese Witherspoon have homes there.
Thanks to the firefighters
Chet Hanks, son of Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson, wrote in an Instagram story that the entire neighborhood he grew up in was burning down. “Avengers” star Chris Pratt thanked the “brave” firefighters and helpers for their efforts. They are “true heroes”.
In mid-December, forest fires in Malibu, around 50 kilometers west of Los Angeles, forced many stars from their homes, including Mira Sorvino and Cher.
In November 2018, a severe fire raged around Malibu, devastating large areas of land and destroying more than 1,500 houses. At that time, the houses of presenter Thomas Gottschalk, US singer Miley Cyrus and actor Gerard Butler, among others, burned down.
