Last October it was announced that the filmmaker Challengers would adapt the book and that the film would focus on the source material, rather than remake the 2000 film starring Christian Bale. It had been reported that Austin Butler would play Patrick Bateman, the Wall Street investment banker who hides his psychopathic tendencies from the world.

What the author of “American Psycho” said about the supposed new movie
Ellis has taken to his eponymous podcast to say he has doubts about the veracity of the rumors. He cited anonymous sources who say the film is not close to beginning production and that the reports may have been to gauge public reaction.
“I have the feeling that it is fake news”Ellis explained. “Somewhere, someone told me there are no contracts. Austin Butler has not signed anything to play Patrick Bateman. Luca does not have a contract. Scott Burns, who is supposed to write the script, also does not have a contract. According to several sources I have, this is simply fake news that has been spread to see how the public will react.”
However, he went on to say that he has no direct contact with the production. “If it exists, I am not involved”said. “I have nothing to do with this, I might get some money if they do it, but I’m not involved creatively on any level, and that’s all I know.”
American Psycho was first adapted to film in the version of Mary Harron from the year 2000, starring Christian Bale like Patrick Bateman. The film deviates somewhat from the novel, but has gained a cult following over the years.
