At the national memorial service for Jimmy Carter, all five living US presidents paid their last respects to the deceased.

This Thursday (January 9th) the late former US President Jimmy Carter (1924-2024) will find his final resting place. Before Carter’s funeral in his home state of Georgia, a memorial service was held at the Washington National Cathedral in Washington, DC during the midday hours. All five living US presidents paid their last respects to the deceased here.

Barack Obama and Donald Trump in conversation

Former US President Barack Obama (63) took a seat in the cathedral right next to his successor Donald Trump (78). Over a long period of time, the 44th President of the USA had an animated conversation with the 45th and soon to be 47th President, as footage from the funeral service shows. Obama was not accompanied by his wife Michelle Obama (60). Trump sat next to his wife Melania (54).

Former Presidents George W. Bush (78) and his wife Laura (78) as well as Bill (78) and Hillary Clinton (77) were also present at the funeral service in the capital of the United States. The outgoing US President Joe Biden (82) said Carter had “character, character, character”.

Prince Edward sat next to Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau

In addition to the five still living US presidents, numerous high-ranking politicians were on site at the national mourning ceremony, such as Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau (53). He sat next to Prince Edward (60), who was traveling on behalf of his brother, King Charles III. (76), who represented the British royal family.

Carter, who was President of the United States from 1977 to 1981, died shortly before the new year at the age of 100 in his hometown of Plains, Georgia. As part of the state funeral, Carter’s coffin was laid out in the Capitol in Washington. Following the funeral service in Washington National Cathedral, the ex-president’s remains will be flown back to his homeland. A private funeral service will be held in Plains before Carter will be buried next to his predeceased wife, Rosalynn (1927-2023).
