Guido Cantz: Election campaign influences carnival

At least Guido Cantz has never consciously experienced this before: the federal election campaign falls in the middle of the carnival session.
Guido Cantz sees it as a challenge that the carnival coincides with the federal election campaign this year. “I can’t remember having experienced something like this in 33 years – it remains very exciting because a lot will happen,” said the comedian and TV entertainer who is active in carnival to the German Press Agency in Cologne. “Of course I have to do my homework and be current and spontaneous.”
It would be difficult if television sessions were recorded before the federal election on February 23rd and only broadcast afterwards – “that could be tricky for me as a speaker, but a solution will be found for that too,” says Cantz (53).
This year’s carnival session is exceptionally long – Rose Monday is only on March 3rd, when meteorologically spring has already begun.
It’s been a long time since carnival and the federal election campaign coincided: in 1983, the Bundestag was elected in early elections after the break of the social-liberal coalition and Helmut Kohl’s takeover of government on March 6th, four years later on January 25th, 1987.
