He Henley Passport Index 2025which evaluates the power of passports based on the destinations they can access without requiring a prior visa, shows a reconfiguration of global influence in terms of mobility.
This year, the most powerful passport is Singaporewhich allows visa-free access to 195 destinationswhile USAafter a decade of declines, fell to ninth place.
In Latin America, Argentina stands out in 17th place, behind Chili (16), but surpassing countries like Brazil and Uruguay.
Asia leads the ranking with notable supremacy:
- Singapore: 195 destinations.
- Japan: 193 destinations.
- South Korea: Tied with several European nations, with 192 destinations.
The strength of these passports reflects diplomatic policies aimed at maximizing global connectivity, as well as stable international relations and favorable bilateral agreements.
The retreat of the United States
The US passport, which led the index in 2014, is now in ninth place, with visa-free access to 186 destinations. The reasons behind this drop include:
- Protectionist policies and the “America first” stance, which limited reciprocity agreements with other countries.
- A stark contrast: while Americans have visa-free access to 186 destinations, their country only allows visa-free entry to citizens of 46 nationsranking 84th on the Henley Openness Index.
Furthermore, the growing interest of American citizens in citizenship by investment reflects an attempt to diversify mobility options.
Argentina It is one of the best positioned countries in the region, ranking 17th with access to 172 destinationswhich places it above Brazil (18th place, with 171 destinations) and Uruguay (24th place, with 156 destinations). Chiliwith 176 destinations, leads in South America, ranking 16th.
