In 2019 you announced that you had become a father. In July you posted a photo of yourself and your child for the first time.
Tawil: It has happened to me several times that I said “she” in an interview. Attentive fans have long since heard from these interviews that it is a girl. That’s why it wasn’t a big deal for me to post a picture where she’s wearing a dress. It’s such a beautiful photo and you can’t see her face. Your privacy remains protected. This is still very important to me.
How would you describe yourself as a father?
Tawil: I’m still in the learning process, but probably much too indulgent. I can’t refuse her anything. I think I’ll have to work on being more consistent at some point.
How has being a father changed your life?
Tawil: It made me more emotional. But you also worry more. The issue of climate change in particular is extremely important when you have children.
What do you value in your upbringing?
Tawil: To the values that I have noticed myself and that are important to me. A respectful treatment of fellow human beings and tolerance.
Why is it so important to you to keep your private life out of the public eye?
Tawil: I’ve always handled it that way. To a certain extent it is also self-protection. As with all people, there are difficult times in life and that’s why I think it’s better to stay private.
Artists have suffered particularly from the Corona crisis. Did you also get something positive out of the crisis?
Tawil: For me it was amazing to realize how much I miss the stage as a musician. I was always grateful that I could do that, but when I had a two-month break, I didn’t find it annoying. This time now has shown me that these moments on stage have always been my balance. Of course, it gave me a lot more time for the family, even if only in the closest circle, and that was really nice. I also found it very positive to see pictures of people who helped each other, volunteers who brought purchases to the door. Those were very moving scenes.
With “The world is on pause” you sing a romantic love song. Who is the song addressed to?
Adel Tawil: The song is about the longing and the desire to finally meet again and to be able to embrace each other, to kiss each other again after a long time.
What do you want to convey to your fans with the song?
Tawil: Actually, I just want to send out love and distract people a little in these still difficult times.
They are currently working on a new album. What can you already reveal about it?
Tawil: As always, the album will be completely ambivalent. It was important to me to start with this song as a harbinger. I wanted to make a song that puts people in a good mood and doesn’t want much else. I was like, “I want to hear this song for myself right now!” And if I have this feeling, there must be people out there who see it the same way. I don’t know yet how the album will be in the end. I’m working hard on it right now. Of course there will also be songs that describe dark moments, the valleys I’ve walked through in recent years. It will also be exciting for me to see how it will sound in the end.
What are your plans for this year?
Tawil: At the moment I’m fully focused on the new album. Working in the studio is really fun and the prospect of finally being able to play concerts again is additional motivation. After this compulsory break, vacation is out of the question anyway.
