Inflation: dairy products and eggs rose almost 5% and bread more than 2% so far in January

The first half of January closed with an increase of 0.5% in the food prices and drinks compared to the previous week. That implies a deceleration of more than half a point compared to the first. But so far this month the indicator has accumulated an increase of 1.7%, according to a report from the consultancy Labor, Capital & Grouth (LGC).

In this way, the items that registered the greatest increases were dairy and eggs, with a 4.7% increaseand behind them breaded with 2.1%.

Below that line, the price of food registers an acceleration in the first two weeks compared to the same weeks in December. In the first of December 2024 the increase had been 1% and in the second they had decreased, 0.3%.

The list of food increases for the second week of January

“The average monthly increase was 1.3% and in the end-to-end measurement in 2% of the last four weeks,” the study indicates. The different types of food products were as follows:

  • Dairy products and eggs: 4.7%
  • Baking products, cereals and pasta: 2.1%
  • Fruits: 1.7%
  • Vegetables: 0.7%
  • Ready-to-go meals: 0.1%
  • Drinks and infusions to consume at home: -0.9%
  • Meats: -1.2%
  • Sugar, honey, sweets and cocoa: -1.5%
  • Oils: -2.1%
  • Condiments and other food products: -3.2%

Inflation in CABA rose to 3.3% in December and accumulated 136.7% in 2024

During December, The Consumer Price Index of the City of Buenos Aires (IPCBA) registered an increase of 3.3%, slightly above the 3.2% of the previous month, and year-on-year it stood at 136.7% (-40.7 percentage points below November). The data is from the Buenos Aires Institute of Statistics and Censuses.

This was observed a small increase in the index compared to November, month after month, which may give some clue about the price indicator at the national level, to be published by the National Institute of Statistics and Censuses (INDEC) next Tuesday.

In relation to the CABA data, what increased the most in the last month of 2024 were insurance and financial services, with a jump of 5.8%followed by restaurants and hotels, with a jump of 5.2%, and alcoholic beverages and tobacco, an item that rose 4.4%.

In fourth place were the communication and information services (+4.3%), education rose 4% and, then, housing expenses (which includes services), which increased 3.9%.

The variation of the IPCBA responded fundamentally to the increases in Housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels, Restaurants and hotels, Food and non-alcoholic beverages, Transportation, Health and Information and communication, which together explained 81.7% of the increase. These items recorded the following increases:

  • Housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels increased by 9% (contributing 0.75 pp to the monthly variation)
  • Restaurants and hotels registered an increase of 5.2% (0.57 pp impact)
  • Food and non-alcoholic beverages averaged an increase of 2.3% (with an incidence of 0.42 pp) in the General Level.
  • Transportation registered an increase of 3.5% (0.38 pp impact)
  • Health rose 3.7% (0.33 pp, due to adjustments in prepaid medicine fees

In the field Foodthe main impulses came from Meat and derivatives (7.6%), Milk, dairy products and eggs (2.1%) and Bread and cereals (1.6%). In the opposite direction, the falls in Vegetables, tubers and legumes (-8.1%) contributed to removing pressure on this division.
