After the Golden Globes, the awards season for the best of film and television in the US is undergoing changes to its calendar.
As the catastrophic Los Angeles wildfires continue for the second consecutive week, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has decided to reconfigure its calendar for the season of the oscar awards for the second time out of sensitivity toward the Southern California community, which is home to about 60% of its roughly 10,000 members.
The executive director of the Academy, Bill Kramerand the president, Janet Yangshared in a statement on Monday that the 97th Academy Awards have not been moved from their date of Sunday, March 2, 2025, that is, 48 days from now. What was modified was the announcement of nominations and other activities.
New Oscars schedule due to the fires in Los Angeles
The voting window for the Oscar nominations, which began at 9 a.m. Pacific Time on Wednesday, January 8 and was due to end at 5 p.m. Pacific Time on Sunday, January 12, and then extended until 5 pm Pacific Time on Tuesday, January 14, has now been extended again until 5 pm Pacific Time on Friday, January 17.
• The Oscar nominations announcement, which was originally scheduled for 5:30 a.m. PT on Friday, January 17, and then extended to an unspecified time on Sunday, January 19, will now take place at 5:30 a.m. PT on Thursday, January 23. They will be televised, as usual, but this year there will be no press among the public.
• The Oscar nominees luncheon, which was originally scheduled for Monday, February 10, has been canceled. (As in recent years, nominees will continue to be invited to small dinners, closer to the date of the Oscar ceremony, with other nominees in their category.)
• The delivery of the Scientific and Technical Awards, initially scheduled for Tuesday, February 18, has been postponed and will be rescheduled for a later date.
