Neil Young Effect: Spotify launches measures against misinformation about Covid-19

The music platform was left in the eye of the storm after Young launched an ultimatum threatening to remove his work from there if “The Joe Rogan Experience” was not withdrawn, a successful podcast where actor and host Joe Rogan spread anti-vaccine ideas and controversies over the Covid-19 pandemic.

“I want you to let Spotify know immediately today that I want all my music off of your platform. You can have Rogan or Young. Not both.” the Canadian artist had said in a letter sent to the platform.

Ultimately, Spotify took no action and Young made good on his threat, pulling all of his albums from the streaming service.

The fact did not go unnoticed by the rest of the musicians, but neither by the financial gurus. This Friday, the shares of the streaming company fell 2%, in a day where they collapsed up to 20%.

And Young wasn’t the only one. After his departure, the legend of folk music Joni Mitchell announced that, in solidarity with his colleague and friend, he had also removed his catalog from the platform.

“I have decided to remove all my music from Spotify. Irresponsible people are spreading lies that are costing people’s lives. I stand in solidarity with Neil Young and the global scientific and medical community,” the singer-songwriter said in a post on her official website.

The artist did the same James Blunt, 47, who also warned that “he will take his music to other platforms” if Spotify does not remove the disputed podcast.
