Actress Margaret Qualley struggled with severe acne after filming “The Substance,” as she has now revealed.
“The Substance” star Margaret Qualley (30) recently revealed that as an actress you also have to make sacrifices. There, the Golden Globe nominee reported how much her skin suffered from wearing prosthetics while filming the body horror film. In some cases so much so that her face was cut away.
“Face was so messed up”
Qualley, who stars in “The Substance” alongside Golden Globe winner Demi Moore (62), told Horowitz that at a certain point her face was “so messed up that they couldn’t film it anymore.” . Therefore, they looked for other ways to cover up her acne-marked face. This was also the case in the opening credits, when they were filming under her skirt “and it looks like there are palm trees around me.” All just to hide the 30-year-old’s face.
Even after filming ended, she continued to suffer from acne, says Andie MacDowell’s (66) daughter. Even at the beginning of work on her next film “Kinds of Kindness”, in which she played the four roles Vivian, Martha, Ruth and Rebecca. Luckily, filmmaker Yorgos Lanthimos (51) took advantage of Qualley’s acne problem for one of these roles.
The healing process took a year
The actress continued to struggle with the consequences long after “The Substance” was filmed: “It probably took me a year to recover physically from it,” said Qualley.
Fellow actress Demi Moore also underwent a major transformation in the body horror film thanks to prostheses. And with success: At the beginning of January, Moore received the Golden Globe for Best Actress for her portrayal of Elisabeth Sparkle – the first award in the actress’ long career.
