The Government adds federal forces to INTERPOL

The national government made official modifications to the Decree No. 684/62which establishes the accession of Argentina to the International Criminal Police Organization (INTERPOL)to incorporate National Gendarmerie, Argentine Naval Prefecture and the Airport Security Police (PSA) in international cooperation tasks. The changes were formalized by the Decree 27/2025published in the Official Gazette and signed by the Minister of Security, Patricia Bullrich.

Reorganization of the Argentine representation in INTERPOL

Until now, the Argentine Federal Police (PFA) acted as the only one National Central Office (OCN) before INTERPOL, fulfilling an exclusive role in representing the country. However, the new decree expands this scheme by including the aforementioned federal forces, which must now designate representatives to work at the OCN headquarters in Buenos Aires. The PFA will remain the main coordinating entity.

Among the new features, the creation of a new article 2 biswhich regulates the integration of these forces into INTERPOL’s operational structure, allowing greater decentralization of tasks, although under the supervision of the PFA.

Scope and objectives of the changes

According to the official text, these modifications seek to optimize the country’s response to transnational crimessuch as drug trafficking, human trafficking and money laundering. Furthermore, they establish the obligation of Ministry of Security to coordinate with the provincial forces and the Buenos Aires City Police to consolidate a more efficient federal security scheme.

Article 5 of the decree specifies that this portfolio will be responsible for issuing complementary regulations and supervising the implementation of the reforms. This includes guaranteeing articulation between national forces and the international community.

Context and international projection

The reform comes weeks after the election of the General Commissioner Luis Alejandro Rollehead of the PFA, as vocal for the Americas on the INTERPOL Executive Committee. His appointment, made during the 92nd INTERPOL General Assembly in Glasgow, reinforces the Argentine presence in the international arena. Rolle will share this representation with other countries in the region.

The decree also mentions the importance of strengthening ties with INTERPOL at times of increasing complexity in the fight against organized crime. Official sources highlighted that the participation of the Gendarmerie and Prefecture will open new opportunities for information exchange and technical training to face global threats.

Implementation and future of the reform

With this restructuring, the Government seeks to adapt local policies to international standards of security cooperation. However, it was clarified that the PFA will maintain leadership and central coordination, ensuring coherence in the country’s representation strategy before INTERPOL.

The modifications are part of a broader plan to modernize and diversify the operational capacity of the Argentine security forces, aligning them with the demands of an increasingly interconnected global environment.
