Pete Doherty is going back to university after abandoning his literature studies. As a lecturer he now teaches French students.
Pete Doherty (45) is no longer exclusively concerned with music. As the scandalous rocker revealed in “Tracks of My Years”, he was teaching there as a lecturer at the request of a French university. According to the singer, the course is dedicated to the topics of “fame and social media”.
“I had already cashed the check”
At first he didn’t feel qualified enough for it, explained The Libertines frontman, who now lives in France. “But I had already cashed the check, so I have to do something. I have a year and a half to write four 45-minute essays, so I might have to get a phone,” Doherty said. Nevertheless, he wanted to make an effort to “educate and entertain.”
The British musician also announced that he would be a strict lecturer. “Anyone who thinks it will be a walk in the park doesn’t know Professor Doherty,” he clarified. Doherty’s own student days were short-lived: he attended Queen Mary University of London for a year before dropping out to study English literature.
Doherty wanted to devote himself to literature
However, he originally thought he would spend his whole life dealing with books. Later he found himself in a “conflict between music and poetry and studying literature.” “But I still thought I wouldn’t make it with music because I wasn’t really good on the guitar,” said the rock musician, who had a very specific idea of his student days. “I thought I was going to meet all these teenage versions of all the writers I loved, Oscar Wilde and George Orwell,” Doherty recalled.
When he arrived at the university, another illusion was taken away from him. “People were there just to get the degree and not to put their lives in the hands of mythology and literature, which was the dream for me,” he recalled. He finally devoted himself to music and founded the successful rock band The Libertines with Carl Barât (46) in the late 1990s. He and his bandmates became known with hits like “Don’t Look Back Into the Sun” and “Can’t Stand Me Now”. Doherty also founded the indie rock group Babyshambles.
