The devastating fires in Los Angeles have led to many postponements in the film industry. The announcement of the script nominations had also been postponed. Now the candidates have been decided.
The scripts for the film musical “Wicked” and the tragicomedy “Anora” have been nominated for this year’s Hollywood screenwriting awards. The Writers Guild of America (WGA) announced the selection of candidates in several categories on Wednesday (local time).
The trophies are scheduled to be awarded on February 15 at ceremonies in New York and Los Angeles. Despite the devastating fires in the greater Los Angeles area, the original date for the awards gala will be retained.
In the original screenplay category, the screenplays for the films “A Real Pain”, “Challengers”, “Civil War” and “My Old Ass” compete with “Anora”. The films based on “A Complete Unknown”, “Dune: Part 2”, “Hit Man” and “Nickel Boys” are competing for the award for best adapted screenplay.
Due to the Writers Guild’s strict conditions of participation, numerous films were once again excluded this year, such as screenplays that were not written by members of the US union.
“Conclave” script was not an option
The script for Edward Berger’s acclaimed Vatican thriller “Conclave”, which was recently awarded a Golden Globe, was not up for selection. The British author Peter Straughan won this prize at the beginning of January. His screenplay is an adaptation of the novel of the same name by the British Robert Harris.
“Conclave” is also the favorite at the British Film Awards known as the Baftas. The nominations were also announced on Wednesday. The film by the Austrian-Swiss filmmaker Berger about a fictional papal election in Rome has twelve Bafta chances of winning, including in the screenplay category.
The WGA award winners often coincide with the later Oscar winners. Last year, for example, the WGA winner for original screenplay (“American Fiction”) also won the corresponding Oscar.
