Both billionaires have developed extremely powerful rockets. Now it’s clear: Not only Elon Musk’s “Starship” can fly, but also Jeff Bezos’ “New Glenn”.
SpaceX founder Elon Musk congratulated his rival Jeff Bezos on the successful launch of his heavy-lift rocket “New Glenn”. “Congratulations on reaching Earth orbit on the first try!” Musk wrote on his Platform X.
Amazon founder Bezos’s space company Blue Origin made it into space during the first test of the new, powerful rocket. Things were different almost two years ago during the first test launches of SpaceX’s “Starship” rocket system: Back then, the system broke apart a few minutes after launch. The second launch also ended in an explosion.
In six launches, the “Starship” has now made it into Earth orbit several times. Once, as hoped, the lower rocket stage flew back to the launch site and was caught there with gripper arms. The next “Starship” test is planned for Thursday evening German time.
